Ubuntu Linux – Maybe not such a good idea…

Some might remember that I compared Ubuntu Linux favorably with Oracle Enterprise Linux a while ago. It seem that I just happened on a good version of Ubuntu (7.04 Feisty Fawn). I recently made the mistake of upgrading to 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon, which promptly messed up my video resolution and killed sound and WiFi.

It’s not that there aren’t enough resources to help me. As a matter of fact, a Google search turns up thousands and thousand of pages of tips. But the first about ten didn’t work for me – either I had to rebuild things using libraries I didn’t have, or there were complicated 20-step guidelines.

Much as I like the concept of Linux, I just want my operating system to work. I don’t have the time and the patience to spend several days messing around with the operating system every few months. With Windows, it’s enough to do a fresh install every 6 months. So I guess it’s back to Windows…
