Mentoring
Jun 20th 2009
With the huge number of different products Oracle is offering, it is no wonder that you as a developer might feel a little overwhelmed. Whether you are new to Oracle or have many years of experience with classical Oracle tools, you’ll surely benefit from being able to ask an experienced person with a good overview of all the options. If you don’t have such a person in your organization, I’ll be happy to assist you.
Benefits of having an Oracle Mentor
You will benefit from having an Oracle mentor in many ways:
- You’ll choose the right tool and approach for your task and skills
- You’ll only spend time and money on the education you really need
- You’ll easily find the right documentation
- You’ll have someone at your side when working with Oracle support
Oracle provides great tools - from JDeveloper and ADF Faces to Application Express and from Oracle Portal to WebCenter Suite. Your challenge is just finding the right tool! Everybody at Oracle is happy to tell you about the great features of each tool, but this doesn’t always translate into knowing which tool to use. Having an Oracle mentor who knows all the tools and your systems and skills means that you can be sure to pick the right tool and approact for your task.
Oracle provides great education in many formats. But the course descriptions don’t always make sense to someone who don’t know the tool yet. Have you ever been in a course that you find out you didn’t really need? If you have an experienced Oracle mentor, you can be sure to take only the training you really need.
Oracle provides great documentation and lots of whitepapers. But looking through the 50-book documentation set for the Application Server or the hundreds of whitepapers on Oracle Technology Network, you might have a hard time finding the exact piece of information you need to accomplish your task at hand. Having an Oracle mentor to guide you through this rich material saves you lots of valuable time.
Oracle provides great support. But sometimes the support analysts with their deep knowledge of specific products will ask questions that you as a beginning developer have a hard time answering. Having an Oracle mentor to help you with your Service Requests will speed up your resolution time.
About Your Mentor
When you sign up for the mentoring program, I’ll be your personal mentor. My name is Sten Vesterli, and I am an Oracle ACE Director. This honorary title is given by Oracle to very top independent authorities in the Oracle community and there are less than 80 ACE Directors world-wide across all Oracle products.
I have worked with Oracle products for 15 years, covering almost all Oracle development tools (JDeveloper, Portal, Forms, Reports, Designer) and I’ve used every Oracle Web/Application server since Oracle Web Server version 1.0.
I’ve written the book “Oracle Web Applications 101” (published by Oracle Press), which was an introduction to five different ways of building Oracle applications.
If you want to meet me in person, I can normally be found speaking at the ODTUG Kaleidoscope Conference, Oracle OpenWorld and in the UK at the UKOUG conference. I have written more than 60 conference papers and articles on Oracle application development and have covered the topic of choosing the right tool since 1998 with presentations like “The Five Ways of Building Oracle Web Applications,” “Choose Your Weapon” and “What’s Hot and What’s Not”.
I work as a consultant - you can see some of my projects on my CV on the consulting page. I occationally give regular training sessions and have been an instructor on Oracle University courses.
About the Mentoring Program
When you sign up, you get unlimited access to me by e-mail. You will receive a unique e-mail address for your personal use and I will do best to respond within 24 hours. The response will normally be an e-mail, but depending on your question, I might also send you a code example, a web link or even a screen movie.
If you have a question about a specific system, you are welcome to send me system descriptions, requirements documents etc. - don’t worry about sending me long documents, I’m a quick reader! If your company requires it, I’ll be happy to sign your company standard Non-Disclosure Agreement.
And if you participate in Oracle conferences (recommended - a great way to learn!), we might even meet in person. I try to make it to the ODTUG, Oracle OpenWorld and UKOUG conferences each year - you can follow my blog or join my TripIt.com network to see where you might catch up with me.
The cost of the mentoring program is $895/month. This gives you unlimited access to a senior Oracle mentor so that you can choose the right tools, build your applications the right way and find the answers you need. You get this value at about the same cost as you’d pay for one day of Oracle Instructor-Led Traning or about half a day of consultning af my normal rate. You can cancel any time at the end of a month.
